The SDG Action Manager

Good For Michigan businesses and Certified B Corps use the SDG Action Manager to track their progress and set goals. Developed by B Lab and the United Nations Global Compact, the SDG Action Manager is an impact management solution that enables businesses to take action on the Sustainable Development Goals through 2030. 

The SDG Action Manager enables dynamic self-assessment, benchmarking, and improvement through a series of questions, guidance, and performance scores related to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact in areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption. FAQs

Q: Will my company’s data and assessment results still be confidential with the SDG Baseline Tool?

A: Yes. Good For Michigan’s privacy policy prohibits us from sharing assessment results the individual results from participating companies/organizations who have engaged with the B Impact Assessment, Quick Impact Assessment. Good For Michigan only shares participant data in an aggregate format or ‘Collective Impact Reports’ comprised of 10 businesses or more. This policy extends to all SDG Action Manager tool as well.

Q: Will I still be able to receive my annual impact improvement report and Good For Michigan consultation after completing the SDG Baseline?

A: Yes. All data and assessment results from the SDG Baseline are carried over to the B Analytics platform. B Analytics has and will continue to house all assessment results from the BIA and SDG Action Manager, and will maintain an archive of all past QIA results. This will allow Good For Michigan to continue generating Impact Improvement reports for program participants and allow us to help your company track its sustainability progress over time.

A: The result of an inclusive global consultation, the Sustainable Development Goals (also known as the Global Goals, or SDGs for short) are a collection of 17 interconnected goals that were agreed to by 193 United Nations member states in 2015. They serve as a blueprint to build a better world for people and our planet by 2030.

Q: Why did B Lab and the UN Global Compact join forces to create the SDG Action Manager?

A: Our insights showed that awareness for the Sustainable Development Goals was high among companies, but they lacked the tools and direction to get started and take action. With this need in mind, we joined forces to bring together our content expertise and unique approaches to corporate sustainability through the SDG Action Manager.

Q: How was the SDG Action Manager developed?

A: The SDG Action Manager features select questions from the B Impact Assessment that have been mapped to the SDGs, supplemented by new performance measures informed by the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact and the SDGs, as well as the expertise of our content advisors.

Q: What is the B Impact Assessment (BIA) and how is it different than the SDG Action Manager?  

A: The B Impact Assessment is a tool that companies use to manage their impact on their workers, community, customers, and the environment. High verified performance on the BIA is one of the three requirements for a company to be eligible to earn B Corporation Certification. Developed by B Lab and the UN Global Compact, the SDG Action Manager incorporates the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to enable businesses to identify risks areas, track improvement, access resources, and manage their impact on the SDGs throughout their operations, supply chain, business model, and collective action. The SDG Action Manager will enable users to integrate the BIA’s comprehensive, stakeholder-based view, with a more focused look at their performance on the Sustainable Development Goals.  

Q: What is the SDG Compass and how is it different than the SDG Action Manager?  

A: The SDG Compass developed by the UN Global Compact in partnership with GRI and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development guides companies on how they can align their strategies as well as measure and manage their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. The guide presents five steps that assist companies in maximizing their contribution to the SDGs.
